Chili Earthquake And Tsunami Advisory

Tsunami advisory sign for the coast at Newport Oregon

As you probably already know, Chile was hit by an 8.8 magnitude earthquake early Saturday morning. The death toll is now over 700. These people are in my prayers.
There was a tsunami advisory in effect for the entire pacific coast Saturday and so my husband and I decided to drive down to the coast and watch the waves. Of course there was nothing exciting going on and apparently even the California coast only saw slight changes in the height of the waves. So that was kind of a bust after driving an hour and a half, but it was a beautifull day and we still went down on the beach with the kids and played a little and I took pictures of course! The sign in the picture above was posted at the entrance to the beach, but of course, noone took it seriously and there were lots of people out on the beach. We got there at close to 4pm, so we went ahead and went out there too.
We tried to go to the lighthouse, but you have to pay if you are in a vehicle and we sure didn’t want to walk all that way, so we decided against it. Seems like you have to pay for anything fun these days. I’m surprised they don’t make you pay to go down on the beach! Oh well, maybe next time we’ll bring the stroller and go ahead and just walk up to the lighthouse.

A Funny thing Happened

So a funny thing happened earlier yesterday. My husband told me last night that he found a piece of paper with dog poop on it sitting on his seat in the car when he got in to go back to work after lunch. He comes home for lunch every day.

Well, Wednsday night after church, we were all getting back into the car when I noticed that our oldest had stepped in some dog poop. I made him get out and wipe his feet on the grass and then I noticed that he had stepped on a piece of paper when he had got in the car the first time, so there was some dog poop on that paper.  I picked it up and put it into a plastic bag that was in the trunk of the car. When we got home, I opened the trunk and put that plastic bag with the poop paper, into the garbage can outside.  The garbage can was empty except for that paper.  The paper was not on my husbands seat when he went to work yesterday morning, and I know it had to have been the same paper I’d put in the trash can.

I do know that after he went back to work, a bum came up into our driveway and was looking for cans in our recycle cart, so I don’t know if he was there earlier and thought that there were cans in the plastic bag and found the dog poop and decided to put it on the drivers seat in the car, or if someone else did it… it’s a mystery.

Moral of the story,, keep your car doors locked even when you’re home during the day!

Cheap Book Binding-Book Binding Instructions

Easy, Cheap Book Binding

I found an excellant cheap book binding method that is so easy and works awesome!  I just did my first book with these book binding instructions today and It was actually kind of fun. I just got my homeschool curriculum from Accelerated Achievement or A2 and all of the books are on the cd that it comes on! It uses the Mcguffy’s readers, so I printed out the primer so my 6yr old can go through the lessons and then we followed the book binding instructions from the link below.  I’ll be printing out more books and binding them this way too,, at least the ones I can’t get at the library.

Here’s the link to the instructions that I found: http://www.sff.net/people/brook.west/bind/bindit.html

It’s great because you can bind the book this way and then I just cut a strip of photo paper 8.5  inches long(my book was 7.5×8.5in.) and a couple inches wide, enough to fold over the binding of the book where the thread is and glued it in place.

I also used dental floss instead of thread. For one, I couldn’t find any thread and, two, I read somewhere that it works well since dental floss is nice and strong.

You could even make a hard or soft cover for your book if you really want to get fancy!

So there you have it. Just visit the link above for excellant instructions for fast, cheap book binding.

Homeschooling Thoughts

So I’ve started, or rather I’ve really already been, homeschooling my oldest son who turned 6 in November. I’ve been doing a lot of research on homeschooling, how to home-school, home-school curriculum, etc…. for about a year or so now, but especially the last few months.

Lately I’ve been reading about people who were homeschooled when they were kids and what their thoughts were about it. It really irritates me when someone who has a bad experience with something automatically blames homeschooling in general, and then they make it their mission in life to try to make homeschooling out to be evil!  I came across a website the other day that was just that! Oh of course they say that not all homeschoolers are bad, but from reading the things they wrote on thier website, it sure made it look as though homeschooling is an evil thing to do and that it isn’t at all good for children and they even refer to it as a “cult”.  Wow, what an accusation!

So, I’d like to know, what happened before public schools were around?? People actually taught thier own kids. Mothers actually spent all day with thier children! Now I know that not all moms can do that today, not because they don’t want to spend so much time with thier kids but because they have to work to make a living,, but,, there are many women who can’t stand to be with thier children all day and they choose to work 8 hours a day 5 days a week or more because they don’t want to be home with their kids that much…. I think that is really, really sad.  I can understand having a part time job, but to have the opportunity to spend more time with your kids, teaching them and watching them grow, and not wanting to take that opportunity and to just let someone else raise your child for 8 hours a day,,, I just don’t understand it. I also realize that some may not feel adequate or comfortable homeschooling, and that’s fine, but it also takes alot of work to be involved with your children in public school, too.

It just amazes me how so many think that the government needs to teach our kids or they just won’t learn how  they should and they won’t be “socialized”.  Again, what happened for the thousands of years that there was no public schooling???  Seems that children overall were more mature and respectful 50 years ago and before that, than they are today.  It was only 1918 that all states had past the laws that all children must attend at least elementary school.. Let’s see, that was not even 100 years ago.  Now I believe that public schooling in the earlier days was very beneficial, but public schooling has evolved alot over the years and it is very, very different than what it used to be.

Now I’m not saying that sending your kids to public schools is completely bad,, I grew up in public school, except for 5-7th grade when I went to a private school.(which was very, very good for me) The thing is, though, that parents tend to send thier kids to school and expect the school to teach them everything and keep an eye on them, etc…  But, if you’re going to send your kids off to school, you’ve got to be extremely involved if you want your children to stay out of trouble and do well with thier grades.  Most parents are not that involved.  For me, even in grade school, I learned some things from my peers that I should not have known about at that age, and I didn’t even hang out with a bad crowd.  My husband will say the same thing. It’s amazing what some grade schoolers will talk about at that age.  That is one of the reasons for us wanting to home-school.

Well, I’ve got to go for now, but this discussion will be continued………

Early to Rise

This morning I woke up thinking my alarm  had gone off already at 8am and that it  was probably around 9am. I didn’t have my glasses on yet so I couldn’t see what the clock said. I got up feeling pretty well rested and took a look at the clock, only to find that it was really only 7:40.  Well, that was kind of nice! Usually even when I wake up later in the morning, I still feel extremely tired. Hmmm…  I still have this very nagging headache, though, that I’ve had now going on day 3.  Hopefully it will go away soon…

Anyway, I was able to sit down and study my bible for a few minutes and spend some time in prayer, so I’m anticipating a better day today than normal,, at least in my outlook of it anyway!

After Midnight Musings

Here I am. I know, I haven’t been keeping up with my blog very well. It’s been quite awhile, but here I am at 2am when I should be snoozing. I’ve been a bit bogged down lately. Just feeling like there’s too much to do and everyone wants something from me, with not much appreciation being given. I know, that’s life, especially for a wife/mom, but I’m sure I’m not alone.  It’s a vicious cycle,, you don’t get something done that you intended to do or wanted to do, then you feel guilty. Then you get sidetracked again, and things start piling up and now you’re really depressed and don’t feel like you can get back on top of things. Then you’ve got dh asking if he has any clean socks and kids saying “mommy can I have this, mommy can you help me with that, mommy, mommy, mommy………  That’s been my life for a long time and it’s really getting old(feeling down about all this, I mean).  I haven’t felt like I’ve had anything interesting to write about so I put off blogging for awhile, but then I feel guilty about that! Ahhhh,, make it stop! Well I’m going to really try to just sit down for a few minutes a few times a week and just type what comes to mind. I know there are interesting things that go on, I guess I just feel like noone really wants to hear about my life. But this blogging thing isn’t about what people want to hear,, it’s about giving a glimpse inside my life and writing down my feelings and sharing about the funny and not so funny things my children can do and say and maybe someone might be interested in reading these posts and maybe some of these posts might make someone laugh or cry or give encouragement.

I don’t know, I guess I just need to persevere. An artist that has painters block can’t just give up,, they have to work through it, especially if they depend on thier art for a living,, same goes for writers. And even though I don’t do this to make money, it’s something that I enjoy doing and want to do, so I must carry on!

Well, now I must get to bed, although it is so quiet and peacefull right now, with the exception of my husband snoring..hehe… but that aside, I love this time of night. Kids are asleep, baby is asleep and I don’t have to think about any of them waking up anytime soon.

So goodnight and sweet dreams
